Beyond Success: Finding Happiness through Connection
Last week we talked about the importance of Courage in finding happiness and success. This week we’ll focus on the third pillar of finding happiness : Connection. Our ability to form relationships and bonds with others leads to feelings of contentment, calm, belonging and purpose. These feelings are important and fundamental to our happiness and can only be found through connectivity with others. As human beings we are designed to have relationships and find meaning and value through relationships with others. Connectivity is fundamental to our overall happiness and success.
Teaching Children to Find True Happiness Through Connectiveness
At Beyond Education we believe that Connectiveness is the third pillar and an important aspect of discovering happiness in your life. Parents should work hard to develop the character and traits that will help their children develop life long connections and relationships that give them a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives. There are a number of ways to teach and develop this characteristic in your children.
Building a Character Trait of Connection:
Helping children develop happiness through connection and relationships starts with nurturing their emotional intelligence and teaching essential social skills. Modeling healthy relationships is crucial—demonstrate kindness, empathy, and constructive conflict resolution in your own interactions. Encourage children to express their emotions, validate their feelings, and practice empathy by considering how others might feel in various situations. Teach conversational tools like taking turns, active listening, and using “I” statements to express their thoughts respectfully. Fostering teamwork through group activities like sports, arts, or community projects helps them build cooperation and mutual respect while feeling part of something greater than themselves.
Additionally, creating opportunities for meaningful interactions is key. Encourage participation in extracurricular activities or community events to help them form connections based on shared interests. Balance screen time with in-person interactions to strengthen their social bonds and communication skills. Promote gratitude and kindness by incorporating daily practices, such as sharing things they’re thankful for or performing small acts of kindness for others. Take time to reflect on their social experiences by asking open-ended questions about their interactions, helping them learn and grow in their relationships. By guiding children to build these skills and connections, you empower them to develop a sense of fulfillment and happiness through meaningful relationships with others.
Connection in College and Beyond
Connection and connectivity are essential for a student's success in college, fostering both academic and personal growth. Building relationships with peers allows for collaboration in study groups and shared learning, while connecting with faculty provides valuable mentorship and access to opportunities. A strong sense of belonging and social bonds enhance emotional well-being, reducing stress and fostering resilience. Networking with alumni and professionals opens doors to internships, career advice, and future job prospects. Interacting with diverse individuals broadens perspectives, sharpens communication skills, and promotes confidence. Staying engaged through clubs, organizations, or campus activities strengthens motivation and accountability. Ultimately, these connections create a supportive environment that enhances learning, builds character, and lays the foundation for lifelong success.
