Interest Exploration and Foundation Building
In this course, students will be focusing on understanding themselves and their college goals. Through guided activities and planning, they will explore their passions, strengths, and values, gaining a clearer sense of their interests and aspirations.
By the end of the course:
- Students will have a well-rounded understanding of what motivates them academically and personally.
- They will create an academic and extracurricular plan to align their high school experience with their long-term goals.
- Students will understand the importance of demonstrated interest and begin to take ownership of their future.
Values Exploration and Personal Development
In this course, students will focus on taking ownership of their values and ideals that motivate them. Building on their work from Grade 9, they will deepen their understanding of their core values and compare them with career assessments to identify their unique strengths and weaknesses. Students will also maintain their focus on extracurricular passions and projects, while starting research on colleges and universities and learning the language of applications.
By the end of the course:
- Students will articulate their personal values and create a personal mission statement.
- They will develop a compelling “hook” for their college applications.
- Students will craft a standardized test plan and conduct a SWOT analysis.
- They will create a campus visit plan and learn effective research strategies for colleges and universities.
- Students will gain an understanding of college rankings and complete a career profile test, along with creating a summer plan.
College Research and Webiste Navigation
In this course, students will focus on understanding and navigating college websites and research platforms to identify schools that match their academic interests and core values. They will explore factors such as research opportunities and quality of life, ultimately narrowing down their choices for applications. Additionally, they will start crafting their personal statements.
By the end of the course, students will:
- Develop website navigation and research skills
- Understand various types of universities
- Complete a spreadsheet of 30-40 colleges of interest
- Grasp college ranking methodologies and common pitfalls
- Explore different types of college applications
- Finalize a list of colleges to apply to
- Demonstrate interest in selected colleges
- Begin coaching for personal statements and essays
College Application Strategy and Financial Aid Negotiations
In this course, students will synthesize their learning from previous years as they take ownership of their college application process. Building on their groundwork from Grade 11, they will focus on developing personalized strategies for each college, emphasizing the qualities that align with their chosen institutions. Students will refine their supplemental essays to ensure they reflect their unique voices and experiences. Additionally, we will assist in financial aid discussions to explore opportunities for better funding solutions.
By the end of the course:
- Students will formulate tailored strategies for each college application.
- They will complete and customize supplemental essays for specific schools.
- Students will take responsibility for submitting applications in a timely and organized manner.
- Students will participate in Beyond Education’s FIT Essay Program, enhancing their writing skills and application readiness.
- They will receive support in negotiating improved financial aid offers upon acceptances.
